W. John Martin is an Australian physician with extensive research experience. He received is medical degree with First Class Honors from the University of Sydney in 1965, followed by a PhD degree from the University of Melbourne in 1970. He obtained further training in the United States at the National Institutes of Health, Harvard University and the National Naval Medical Center. He is a Board Certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist with subspecialty qualifications in Immunology and in Medical Microbiology.
Using a combination of molecular and virus culture techniques, Dr. Martin was the first to detect stealth adapted viruses. These viruses evade the cellular immune system by deletion or mutation of the relatively few viral components normally targeted by the cellular immune system. Stealth adaptation was shown to have occurred with African green monkey simian cytomegalovirus (SCMV), which undoubtedly arose from SCMV contaminated poliovirus vaccines used in earlier years. Virtually all viruses can become stealth adapted as a means of evading the cellular immune system. Dr. Martin has long argued that there is an epidemic of stealth adapted virus infections; explaining the increasing prevalence of many chronic illnesses, especially those in which brain function is impaired. These illnesses include autism and learning/behavioral problems in children; chronic fatigue and psychiatric diseases in adults; and some forms of neurodegeneration in the elderly.
Dr. Martin has further shown that although stealth adapted viruses bypass the cellular immune system, they can still be resisted through an auxiliary defense mechanism provided through an alternative cellular energy (ACE) pathway. Indeed, he has shown that the ACE pathway is also active in suppressing infections caused by conventional, non-stealth adapted, viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), herpes zoster virus(HZV) and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Dr. Martin has devised simple methods to help patients monitor and, if necessary, enhance their ACE pathway. It is hoped that this approach will prevent many cases of autism from occurring and will markedly improve the lives of those now suffering from incapacitating neurological and psychiatric illnesses. His studies are conducted within the Institute of Progressive Medicine and are supported by a non-profit public charity called MI Hope Inc. Dr. Martin’s research can be viewed at www.s3support.com
